What a burst pipe actually looks like
Not every burst announces itself with a fountain in the kitchen. The quiet ones do more damage, because nobody notices until the plaster sags.
Call it a burst if you're seeing any of these:
- Water spraying, dripping or seeping from a wall, ceiling or floor with no tap running
- A damp patch that keeps spreading and never dries out
- The water meter spinning while every tap and appliance in the house is off
- A hissing sound inside a wall cavity or under the floorboards, even faint
- A sudden drop in water pressure across the whole house
That last group matters. A line can split out of sight and keep leaking for weeks before it shows on the surface.
Why pipes burst in the older streets
The housing stock tells the story. Fibro and weatherboard cottages put up for the railway workshops, and the brick-veneer homes that followed through the 1960s to 1980s, still carry much of their original pipework. Four causes cover most of the bursts we attend.
Braided flexi hoses
Braided hoses fitted under sinks and behind washing machines during past kitchen and bathroom updates age out quietly. The braid corrodes, the lining weakens, and one day it lets go at mains pressure.

One thing not to do: don't try to clamp, tape or glue a split pipe as a fix. It rarely holds, and it can complicate the repair. Shut the water off and leave the pipe alone.

Can a burst pipe wait until morning?
If the water is off at the meter and nothing is spreading, overnight usually does no harm. If you can't isolate it, or water reaches plaster or wiring, ring straight away.
Why do older homes burst more often?
Age, mostly. Plenty of cottages around the older streets off Macquarie Road and Main Road still carry pipework installed when the house was built, and it has carried water ever since.
What counts as an emergency besides a burst pipe?
